Paul Cezanne, 1839 - 1906, was a French artist - member of the Impressionist movement and a pre cursor of the post impressionist and cubisme movements. He was influenced in his work by Delacroix, Coubert and Veronese and in turn he was a great influence on Braque, Picasso and Matisse. He is considered to be the father of modern art.
Early in his career his works were rejected by the Paris Salon, the official art organisation of the time, which lead to him exhibiting with the Impressionists. However as his work was more realism than the impressions (captured in the blink of an eye) he didn't really fit in with them either. He exhibited with them three times and then didn't exhibit again publicly for another twenty years. He suffered from depression throughout hids career and this can br seen in soime of the darker paintings. In 1895 he retreated to a cabin on the Mont St Victoire to paint and 'evolve' Cubism. His paintings were not readily accessible and he became almost a legend to the public - the painter heard about but never seen. He was quoted as saying “The world doesn’t understand me, and I don’t understand the world, that’s why I’ve withdrawn from it.”
