His father was a renowned scholar and painter of birds. Hendrik took drawing lessons from Gerardus Johannes Bos. Between 1880 and 1884 he continued his training at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. For two years from 1882 he shared a studio in Leiden with his future brother-in-law, the still-life painter Menso Kamerlingh Onnes (he married Jenny in 1892). From 1885 onwards he experimented in still life painting influenced by Kamerlingh Onnes and French painters. He was a superb colourist, his style and choice of colours very different from Hague School style. In Brussels he met members of the avant-garde artists' group Les Vingt. Under their influence he began working with a rough brush strokes and intense colours. He gained success with his large and exuberant works of floral still lifes and landscapes. In 1891 he took part in the salon of Les XX in Brussels. By 1892 his work had changed again and he focused on drawings in crayons with serene subjects. The painting of Louis Pasteur won him the Legion of Honour in 1886 at the exhibition at the Paris Salon. In Finland, he was one of the founders of the Realist art movement. He moved around the U.S and between 1860 and 1870 he travelled to Brazil, Nicaragua, Colombia, Panama, and Jamaica, where he created jewel-like paintings of tropical flowers and birds, especially hummingbirds. She achieved fame and recognition very early in her career. In 1770, she was admitted to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. She was unanimously elected, making her one of only four women accepted into the Académie before the French Revolution. Despite the low status that still life painting had at this time, her highly developed skills, especially with flowers, and her “precocious talent and the rave reviews” brought her to the attention other artists and more importantly to the court.

Queen Marie Antoinette took a particular interest in her work. Such was that interest that with her Court connections and pressure from Marie Antoinette, she received space in the Louvre in 1781 which was highly unusual for women artists. Not only that, but soon after she married Jean-Pierre Silvestre Coster, a wealthy lawyer, parlementaire in the presence of Marie Antoinette at the courts of Versailles. Marie Antoinette signed the marriage contract as a witness and bestowed titles on them of the very highest order, the noblesse de robe, making them almost indistinguishable from the old nobility – in hindsight and given what was to come, not necessarily a good thing.

Amazingly despite her newly noble status and her close connection to the throne, she escaped the guillotine and avoided the chaos of the French Revolution in 1789. With the Reign of Terror in 1793, the ancient regime (the royalty and aristocracy), which up to this point had supported her career simply disappeared. There is evidence that during this terrifying period she worked for the Gobelins Tapestry factory. During Napoléon's reign, the empress Josephine did buy two works from her in 1804, but her reputation was all but gone. In addition to still lifes, she painted portraits and genre paintings, but because of the restrictions placed on women at the time her success at figure painting was limited. In 1817 she exhibited Still Life with Lobster in the Paris Salon. She donated it to the restored King Louis XVIII. There is some evidence that Vallayer-Coster gave it to the king as an expression of her joy as a loyal Bourbon supporter after the turbulent years of the Revolution and Napoleon. She died in 1818 at the age of seventy-three having painted more than 120 still lifes, always with her distinctive colours and flair.

Still Life With Herrings

Artist: Jean-Siméon Chardin

Date:1735

Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699 –1779) was an 18th-century French painter. His early interest in drawing was inspired by his mother’s garden and the fields and woodlands surrounding his home. As a young man he saved money from odd jobs in order to attend art school. Just a few years after the Civil War ended in 1869, Porter became the first African American to attend the National Academy in New York and was one of the first African Americans to exhibit there. He was the only African-American artist at the turn of the century who painted in still life. In 1878, Porter set up a studio in Hartford, Connecticut and his fruit and flower paintings were popular and purchased by area collectors. Famous local resident the author Mark Twain bought his work and hung it prominently in his dining room. The influential landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church visited his studio, and bought paintings, and complimented his use of colour declaring that Porter had "no superior as a colorist in the United States."

Artist: Helen Searle

Still Life With Fruit & Champagne

Date: 1869

Helen Searle (1834 - 1884), was an American painter of still lifes who was stylistically associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. Initially, Manet wanted to pursue a naval career however when he failed the entrance exams for the naval academy, he decided to become an artist. In 1850 he entered the studio of Couture, who wanted to avoid conventional academic training and combine traditional painting methods with new techniques like allowing under-paint to form part of the final composition. Manet would absorb this technique into his work. His wealth meant that he didn't need to sell his work but he desperately wanted recognition as an artist. Baudelaire's call to young artists to paint contemporary life rather than antiquity and to take a distanced point of view because objectivity is more sincere and honest, appealed to him.

In 1863 the Salon jury rejected more than half of the five thousand works submitted, including his ‘Déjeuner sur l'herbe’ (yes THAT one at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris). The same year the Salon des Refusés was organized by Napoleon III in an attempt to calm the artists, and quell anti-government sentiment. The painting caused a “formidable succès de scandale” both for its technique and subject matter. He caused another scandal with ‘Olympia’ two years later at the Salon. Even though his work often received severe criticism, he continued to submit works to the Salon, which most he felt was the only legitimate place to prove himself as an artist.

At the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1867, Manet organized his own pavilion next to the Exposition where he showed more than fifty paintings. Émile Zola, the French writer, recognized his talent and modernity and vehemently defended him against harsh criticism and lauded him as the greatest painter of the nineteenth century. By the 1870s Manet's palette had lightened and his brushwork became freer. These new aspects of his painting technique may have come from his contact with the impressionist group that began exhibiting in 1874. Although Manet was friendly with its members, and understood their goals, he never exhibited with them and continued to show his paintings at the official Salon. During the late 1870s, he began to experience health problems that made it difficult for him to work in oil painting, instead, he began to draw using pastel. Manet was truly innovative in depicting subjects of urban life. However, during his lifetime he enjoyed little support, and it was not until the impressionists gained general recognition that Manet was acknowledged as a truly modern painter.

Vase of Roses

Artist: Eva Gonzales

Date: ca.1870

Eva Gonzales, 1849-1883, was a French impressionist painter and student of Manet.

Costumes Parisiens

Artist: Pierre de la Mesangere

Date: ca 1800

Pierre de la Mesangere, 1761-1831, was a priest and teacher of philosophy and literature in La Fleche. during the French Revolution he wrote for a living. This exquisite masterpiece is now on view at The Met Museum, New York.

Artist: Grace Joel

Roses

Date: 1894 c

Grace Joel was the first daughter of a cultivated and well-connected Jewish family who believed strongly in the value of education, including education for young women. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, then from 1854 he devoted himself to copying the works of the old masters in the Louvre. Although he was friends with several artists that would go on to become the “Impressionists”, including Whistler and Manet, his own work remained traditional in style, with the romanticisim of earlier generations. He regularly exhibited with his close friend Édouard Manet and the Impressionists, but he remained committed to traditional studio production and never painted outdoors. Whistler brought attention to Fantin in England, where his still-lifes sold incredibly well. In addition to his realistic paintings, Fantin-Latour created imaginative lithographs inspired by the music of some of the great classical composers. In 1875, Henri Fantin-Latour married a fellow painter, Victoria Dubourg, after which he spent his summers on their country estate in Lower Normandy, maybe these late summer flowers come from his gardens?

Use the search bar to find other work, including portraits, by this gifted artist.

Random fact: Fantin-Latour's painting "A Basket of Roses" was used as the cover of New Order's album Power, Corruption & Lies in 1983.

Still Life with Apples and Pitcher

Artist: Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissaro lived with his family in St Thomas in the West Indies yet when he was just 12 years old, his parents sent him away to a school in Passy, near Paris. He became an influential painter and a key figure in the Impressionist movement. He was the only artist to show his work in all eight Impressionist group exhibitions.
