Although she spent the majority of her working life in England, she was born and raised in New Zealand. She is regarded as one of the most prominent and important artists in New Zealand, but her reputation is based more on the paintings from her time spent in Europe than it is on those from her native region.
The daughter of Rachel Owen Parker and W. M. Hodgkins, a prominent member of the city's art circles as well as a lawyer and amateur painter, Hodgkins was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1869.
