In 1939 ‘Roses’ and other works of art were seized at the request of Nazi officials form Georg Hirschland’s private art collection at his home in Essen. The museum association and the municipality of Essen jointly purchased them for 350,000 marks, which was a small proportion of their market value. Georg Hirschland received the equivalent of $7,000. The painting and others were recovered after the war and in July 1950 ‘Roses’ was one of nineteen works relocated to his heirs in New York. They subsequently sold the painting in 1951 for $100,000. This exquisite masterpiece is now on view at The Met Museum, New York.
