Landscape on the Island of Falster
Artist: Vilhelm Hammershøi
Date: 1890-91
Vilhelm Hammershøi was a well know and celebrated Scandinavian artist in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work featured subdued colours and quiet paintings of interiors with a magical quality. His earlier works, depicting everyday life were more popular than his later paintings, which critics felt were too detailed and their simplicity was lost. Almost 100 years after his death, Hammershøi’s painting Da Læser et Brev (Ida Reading a Letter) (1899) sold at auction for over $2 million—the record for a Danish work of art.
