Sir Jeffry Wyatville RA (1766 –1840) born into a dynasty of architects stretching across the 18 &19th centuries. He was an English architect and garden designer. Born Jeffry Wyatt in 1824 he was allowed by King George IV to change his surname to Wyatville (yes that is the right spelling). He began his architectural training in his uncle Samuel Wyatt's office. In 1792 when he moved to his uncle James Wyatt's office in London. He doesn’t appear to have travelled abroad as part of his education but this may well be down to the ongoing Napoleonic Wars. He had a long and distinguished career, designing and remodelling numerous prestigious buildings including work at Longleat, Badminton, Hyde Park, Woburn Abbey, Hampton Court, Chatsworth, The Palace of Westminster and his final and largest commission the remodelling of Windsor Castle. He won the commission for Windsor Castle in a competition between himself and three other esteemed architects, Robert Smirke, John Nash and John Soane. Parliament had voted a budget of £300000 for the project, the final bill a quarter of which was for furnishings came in at over £1 million (approximately £33 million in 2020). He was knighted by George IV in 1828. and buried in St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.
