Still Life with Jar, Cup and Apples
Artist: Paul Cezanne
Date: ca. 1877
Paul Cezanne, (1839-1906), was a French artist and member of the Impressionist movement. He was a pre cursor of the post impressionist and cubisme movements. Influenced in his work by Delacroix, Coubert and Veronese , in turn he himself was a great influence on Braque, Picasso and Matisse. He is considered to be the father of modern art.
In addition to the apples which are one of his favourite subjects—the ceramic jar and cup seen in this still life feature in numerous paintings. The distinctive wallpaper in the background appears in several paintings from about 1877, when he rented an apartment at 67 rue de l’Ouest, Paris.
