The Milkmaid
Artist: Johannes Vermeer
Dated: ca 1660
Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. He specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life and in his lifetime was only a moderately successful provincial genre painter and left his wife in debt at his death. Ironically today his paintings sell for millions – his work “The Concert” was stolen in 1990 and has never been recovered, today it has an estimated value of $250million!!! There are only 36 paintings known to be painted by him as he worked slowly and with great care. He frequently used very expensive pigments and is famous for his incredible skill in depicting light in his paintings.
