Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny was a French botanist and geologist. He was the younger brother of French naturalist and South American explorer, Alcide d'Orbigny. At the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, d'Orbigny identified many of the flowering plant species returned to France from his brother's natural history collecting journeys through South America. He was in charge of overseeing the 16 volume "Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle" considered to be one of the best natural history encyclopedias of the 19th century and is still in print now the latest edition dates to August 2018. It has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. He died in Paris on Valentines day 1876.
