The Basket of Apples
Artist: Paul Cezanne
Dated: ca. 1893
Paul Cezanne, (1839-1906), was a French artist and member of the Impressionist movement. He was a pre cursor of the post-impressionist and cubism movements. Influenced in his work by Delacroix, Coubert and Veronese, in turn he himself was a great influence on Braque, Picasso and Matisse. He is considered to be the father of modern art.
Cézanne said that “Art a harmony running parallel to nature,” not an imitation of nature. This painting was one of very few signed works and painted for an important Parisian exhibition in 1895, a rare opportunity for the public outside of his native Provence to see his work.
