Boy in Boat, Gloucester
Artist: Winslow Homer
Dated: 1880/81
Winslow Homer (1836–1910) is regarded by many as the greatest American painter of the nineteenth century. Many of his dazzling watercolours concentrate on the beauty, force, and drama of the sea. In the early 1880s, Homer increasingly desired solitude, and his art took on a new intensity.
Boy in Boat, Gloucester was started whilst he was staying at a lighthouse on Ten Pound Island in Massachusetts. He often painted the local children waiting for their fathers to return on the big fishing boats, playing in boats and fishing. This watercolour is where he began to experiment with scraping, showing the white paper underneath making bright highlights.
