Joseph Schillinger (1895–1943) was a Russian composer, music theorist. He was born in Kharkiv, in the Kharkov Governorate of the Russian Empire (present-day Ukraine) and died in New York City.
Schillinger was a natural teacher and communicated his musical knowledge in the form of a precise written theory. He believed it was possible to use mathematical expressions to describe all forms of art : painting, architecture, design and most importantly to him music.
When in New York, Schillinger became famous as the advisor to many of America's leading popular musicians and concert music composers including Earle Brown, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller. He worked with and helped George Gershwin whilst he was composing “Porgy and Bess”.
