Artist: James Pattison Cockburn
Date:1832
Born in 1779 in New York into a military family, Pattison Cockburn was an army officer and watercolourist. He learnt to draw whilst at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich, where he showed himself to be an excellent topographer with a good sense of perspective - very useful in the days before photography. He travelled all over the world, Cape Colony, Manila, England, Denmark, Belgium, Italy, Canada, Cadiz …. He had a long military career and retired with the rank of Major-General. Throughout his time in the army, he sketched and produced a steady flow of travel books which he illustrated himself.
