Design for Grosvenor House, London : North Elevation
Artist: Thomas Cundy
There are three Thomas Cundy’s all of them architects. Thomas Cundy (1765-1825), Thomas Cundy the Younger (1790-1867), then Thomas Cundy III (1821-1895). From the date of the engraving I think it is most likely to be the work of Thomas Cundy the Younger. He joined his father's architects practice and in 1825 on his father’s death he ultimately succeeded him as surveyor of the Grosvenor Estate a job, he had for 41 years. He held the position during the main phase of the development of Belgravia and Pimlico. Later in his career he worked mostly on building churches on the west side of London. When he died in 1867 his son Thomas Cundy III took over the firm.
