Artist: Francoise Hubert Drouais
Francois Hubert-Drouais – (1727 – 1775) French . This painter from the end of the reign of Louis XV in France was a great favourite of the royal court and renowned for his skill at ‘veiling physical imperfections’. He painted Louis XV and his official mistresses including Madame de Pompadour & Mme du Barry as well as the young Marie-Antoinette. (In fact he was consulted to go to Austria to paint the young Marie Antoinette before her marriage to the future Louis XVI but his commission was considered too high, Ducreux was sent instead). His popularity meant that his portraits became a must-have accessory for the aristocracy of the time.
Sadly who the Marquise herself was is lost, I can find more information about her 18th century printed cloth dress, with the brilliant gold and white fabric strewn with beautifully detailed flowers and lace than about her. Hubert Drouais’ skill at painting the fabric means that it is used to show the fashions of the day.
