Study of Libertia Ixioides
Artist: Sarah Featon
When Sarah Featon and her husband Edward published their book The Art Album of New Zealand Flora, Their mission was to correct the false notion that New Zealand had no flowers. The Featons were supplied with plants by other botanists, many of them women, who Sarah made sure were acknowledged in the final text. The book was the first in New Zealand published with the new and expensive chromolithography colour technology; the cost of production in making certain certain Sarah’s exquisite water colours were faithfully reproduced almost bankrupted the publishing company.
Many original watercolours for the Art Album of New Zealand Flora were purchased for the Dominion Museum in 1919. At that time Sarah was widowed and desperately short of funds, she was reimbursed £150.
